Supervision Across the Generations: Intergenerationally Understanding & Effectively Supervising Multiple Generations

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Each generation is unique, with its own strengths and assets. However, when generations combine in the workplace, there can be conflict, uneasiness, and uncertainty on all sides. This workshop will address meeting the supervisory needs of different generations, managing potential generational conflicts, and helping all employees to work successfully together.

 

LECTURE OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to

1. Identify traits typical of different age groups of workers

2. Identify effective supervisory interactions for each age group

3. Practice identifying strategies for effective supervision in scenarios

SPEAKER BIO(s):

Peggy Reed-Lohmeyer is an LCSW in the state of Missouri. She earned her BSW from Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri & her MSW from University of Missouri-Columbia. She has worked in a variety of fields, including youth residential, outpatient mental health, home health & hospice, corrections, as well as providing consultations at a medical hospital. The bulk of her clinical work was at Fulton State Hospital. After 25 years of service, she retired from full-time state employment, as FSH’s Risk Manager. She continues to work part-time for the hospital. She has provided clinical supervision to numerous social workers over the years and continues to do so. She has taught college classes for the past 10 years, working at three area colleges.

She is active in the community, including providing a grief support group, facilitating survivors of suicide loss groups, and serving in various roles with the local American Foundation for Suicide Prevention chapter.

She is Secretary of the Missouri Chapter of NASW & also serves as the Ethics Committee Chair.

AGENDA

1:00 – 2:00 pm = 60 minutes, 1 clock hour, 1.2 contact hours, .12 CEUs

Part One:

  • The concept of generational cohort will be covered—what it is, how identified, how may impact work & supervision
  • Traditionalist, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, & iGen/Generation Z will be covered in detail, including common traits/characteristics, influencers, and workplace impact & considerations
  • Attendees will be encouraged to consider how their own generation may be a factor in supervision, as well as that of their supervisees

 

2:00 – 3:00 pm = 60 minutes, 1 clock hour, 1.2 contact hours, .12 CEUs

Part Two:

• Finish above description of iGen/Generation Z

• Effective supervision for each generation will be covered, including recruiting, communication, engagement, dynamics, management, retaining, appreciating generational diversity, performance expectations & ageless values

 

3:00 – 4:00 pm = 60 minutes, 1 clock hour, 1.2 contact hours, .12 CEUs

Part Three:

• Group discussion: supervision for licensure plan in general & of different generations

• Group discussion: supervisory scenarios of generational conflicts at work

• Videos (4-6 minutes) of differences between Baby Boomers & Millennials in language & basic knowledge

• TedTalk viewing (16 minutes) or small group discussion on generational strengths & challenges

• Questions & answers

Missouri Institute of Mental Health

The University of Missouri-St. Louis, Missouri Institute of Mental Health will be responsible for this program and maintain a record of your continuing education credits earned.

The Missouri Institute of Mental Health will award 3 clock hours or 3.6 contact hours (.36 CEUs) for this activity.

 

National Board for Certified Counselors

 

MIMH is an NBCC - Approved Continuing Education Provider, No. 6339 (ACEPTM) and may offer NBCC - approved clock hours for events (or programs) that meet NBCC requirements.
