Motivational Interviewing for Use in Integrated Health Care Settings

Description:

More and more primary health settings are recognizing the need for their patients to make major lifestyle changes in order to reduce the impact of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and a multitude of other conditions. Primary health settings also have patients with risky substance use and/or mental health issues. At the same time, behavioral health providers are recognizing the impact of physical health on their client’s quality of life and wellness outcomes. One tool for both settings is Motivational Interviewing which is increasingly used for improving health outcomes by addressing behavior change. This webinar will offer some practical suggestions for basic health care behavior changes, including, but not limited to adopting healthy eating habits and increasing physical activity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to explain how Motivational Interviewing can be used for brief health related consultations.
  • Participants will be able to name at least 2 health related behavior changes appropriate for the use of Motivational Interviewing.
  • Participants will be able to provide an example of change talk in a health care setting.
  • Participants will list the key skills of Motivational Interviewing needed when providing a consultation for a physical health issue.
