Approximately ¾ of antidepressants are prescribed in the primary care setting, yet many primary care providers lack comprehensive training on depression screening and treatment. In this presentation, Dr. Kelly Gable and Dr. Jaron Asher will discuss the medical and psychiatric triggers for depression, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and common assessment measures. In addition, they will review specific cases and offer their suggestions for appropriate treatment.
Kelly N. Gable, Pharm.D. Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, joined the SIUE School of Pharmacy from the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy. Dr. Gable is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, School of Pharmacy, and subsequently completed a specialty residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice at the University of Southern California. Dr. Gable is a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist. She currently holds joint appointments with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, as well as with the Missouri Department of Mental Health. Her clinical appointment is with Community Alternatives in St. Louis Missouri, where she works collaboratively with psychiatry in the treatment of persons with persistent mental illnesses. Her areas of interest include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, Assertive Community Treatment, and medication adherence in the mentally ill.
Jaron Asher, MD serves as Chief Behavioral Officer of Family Care Health Centers. Dr. Asher joined Family Care Health Centers in 2007. He is a board certified psychiatrist and Chief Behavioral Health Officer. He attended medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He completed his psychiatric residency at St. Louis University.Dr. Asher has worked as a psychiatrist in the inpatient setting, in the emergency department, in private practice and now in the community health center and community mental health center setting. His interests include adolescent psychiatry, integrated healthcare, community psychiatry, and the Recovery Movement.
